The “katemfe” plant also known as the miracle plant, sweet prayer plant or ewe moi-moi, is used to package “waakye” in Ghana and used to wrap beans pudding in Nigeria. This leaf is known to possess several benefits.

Many in Ghana prefer to go for the“Ketemfe” leaves as packaging for food (waakye) sold from vendors, rejecting the norm of using plastic rubber for food packaging. They believe it’s more hygienic and safer to serve food with.

There is a growing concerns of the improper handling of the “Ketemfe” leaves used to package “waakye” by food sellers.

The leaves are often left exposed to dirt and bacterial that could possibly affect our health unknowingly. It is also observed that same napkin used to clean or wipe dirt from the leaves before serving with it, is usually maintaned to clean many or the remaining leaves to be used.

Some Tips to Consider when buying food in “Ketemfe” leaves.

-Observe how it’s been kept or handled.

-If you suspect improper handling of the leaves where you buy your “waakye”, LEAVE and look for a better place to buy your food to prevent any possible infections.

-If you buy your cooked food that is served with the leaves, make sure to eat while it’s still Hot. Eating from it hot may help.
